Cleaning Your Vape Tank
Cleaning your vape tank is an essential part of enjoying vaping long term. Failure to clean your vape device can leave you with unpleasant tastes and a poorly performing device. This is because most e-liquids leave behind a thin film of residue as they are vaporized, which eventually builds up on your coils or in your wick and can affect the way you vape and the flavor of your e-liquid of choice.
Here are some tips for how to properly clean your tank for best results.
If you don’t have much time you can still combat residue buildup with a quick rinse of your vape tank. Start by disassembling your tank completely, including removing the atomizer head if you have one. Gently remove the O-rings from their place to get any e-liquid out from behind them. Heat up a small cup of water in the microwave for two minutes.
While the water is heating up, rinse your major tank components under the faucet to get rid of any loose debris. Then place all of your parts into the cup of hot water. Let them soak until the water has cooled to room temperature. Using a soft, dry cloth, gently wipe off each piece, making sure not to damage the O-rings. Spread everything out and let it dry for a couple hours before reassembling.
If your coil head is not too old you may be able to reuse it, but if you plan on switching to a new flavor it is best to replace your coil head as well.
A PG Soak
Alternatively, you may choose to soak all of your components in unflavored PG liquid. You can purchase this liquid without any flavorings or nicotine. It helps clean your tank by diluting any flavor that may be stuck to the pieces. Fill a small bowl with enough PG to cover the parts and let them soak overnight. The benefit of this is that PG does not have the same drying effect as water on your O-rings, which may extend their life slightly.
Alternative Cleaning Solutions
In addition to water and PG, there are a number of other cleaning options available. Some people prefer to soak their tanks in VG instead of PG. While this serves the same purpose as PG, VG is actually a much more viscous liquid so it can be significantly harder to get off your tank once it’s done soaking.
You can also choose to use ethanol, vinegar or baking soda. Any of these will work, but you must be absolutely sure to rinse your tank completely lest they leave behind a lingering flavor or burn onto your coils. The vinegar especially can ruin your day if you don’t get it all out.
Ultrasonic cleaners are widely used for jewelry and medical device cleaning. It’s no surprise that vapers have started using these tabletop devices to clean their vape tanks as well. You can pick one up relatively cheap, and it will be a great addition to your regular vaporizer cleaning routine.
These are especially useful if you have multiple devices to clean at once. A quick 5-to-10-minute stint in the ultrasonic cleaner can restore your tank to like-new condition.
About Your Coils
It is important to remember that even after cleaning your tank, reused coils may retain some of the old flavors. The best practice is to completely replace your coils and wicks or coil heads, depending on what type of device you have. If this isn’t feasible, it is possible to clean your coils and rid them of some of the buildup.
You can do this by removing the wick and then dry-firing your coils until they turn red hot. This will burn off any residue that has built up and restore your coils as close as possible to new. Many people choose to do this in between flavors even if they don’t completely clean their tanks.
When To Clean Your Tank
There is much debate over how often you should be cleaning your vape tank. For the most part, cleaning your tank every time you change flavors is a practical thing to do. However, if you’re dedicated to only using a single flavor, it is still prudent to completely disassemble and clean your tank once a week or so. This will help extend the life of your coils and result in a more enjoyable vaping experience.
